4If you're planning to spend time in this region, this is the book!  May 04, 2010 By J. Murray
True to its title, this book offers a very complete guide to the Four-Corners region. It's thorough--not schematic--and suggests the enthusiastic, knowledgeable, yet laid-back explorations of someone who's lived in the region a while. There are lots of back roads and out-of-the-way places here. If you're looking for golf courses or cinemas, mountain bike or rock-climbing tours, you'll find the listings here. It's especially good on restaurants, with separate indexes sorting dining by price and cuisine (e.g. Native American or Thai). For someone looking for a brief tour of a few major sites, the Fodors or Frommers might suffice, but for anyone planning to spend time in the region, this is the book to get!

5a solid Great Destinations guide  Feb 03, 2010 By Michael Connolly Jr. "bigrufus"
I own several Great Destinations guides. This guide to the Four Corners Region is one of my favorites. A comprehensive look at such a wide expanse of the Southwest, I really enjoy using this book to plan my road trips to Arizona, rural Utah, southwest Colorado, and northeast New Mexico.

I like the author's conversational and inviting tone of writing - she makes me want to get in the car and get out there right now. The writing suggests it was accurately researched. The telephone numbers I've called are accurate and web page addresses listed are still current. I get the impression the author really vetted out each of her recommendations for the numerous points of interest.

Until I read one of the chapters in this book, I didn't know that I could experience so much Americana while traveling on the old Route 66 in Arizona and New Mexico. There's a lot of cool old relics on the Route 66 that I wouldn't have known to look for without this guide.

Another strength of this book is that I feel more prepared to visit the Navajo Nation in Arizona. My next road trip will be this spring 2010; there's several pages of seasonal events notated in this book - saves me a lot of time with web surfing. I'll be planning on seeing some true Navajo cultural events when I pass through. Can't wait!

2Disappointing  Jan 06, 2010 By Gwen P.
I recently purchased this book via Amazon in order to help my husband and I to plan our summer trip to the Four Corners. Since there were no reviews to offer any insight about the book, I hoped for the best. Unfortionately, the book is not what I had hoped for. The following are the pros and cons of the book:

PROS: The book can easily be thrown in a backpack/travel bag without being combursome. There are a nice selection and variety of pictures which make the planning process fun and interesting. The author makes a point of including expensive, mid-range and budget lodging options at all of the locations. The book is very easy to read. The book appears to cover all of the main attractions/sites for each location.

With that said.....

The CONS: The book is poorly organized. Though the author did her best to attempt to organize it in a sensible manner, it is rather a pain. She breaks it down into "Utah's Canyon Country", "Grand Canyon/Flagstaff" and "Colorado's Plateau" which is great, except she then adds two other sections called, "Route 66" and "Native America". These last two sections contain information that isn't found in the regions sections. Consequently, I found myself having to pull out my map and attempt to locate where she's talking about in order to determine if we'll be close to it. I think the Native America and Rt 66 sections should have been incorporated into the other sections so that the reader can visualize where the sights, etc are located without having to consult a map.

Though there are a few maps in the book, they are used for VERY general information. There are no detailed maps for cities or parks located in the book. Better maps would be wonderful!

This book was written very generally. Unlike other guide books which offer insightful comments about resturants, lodging, sites, etc, this offers the bare minimum of information. We had visited some of the lodging facilities and sites mentioned in the book and are saddened to see how much is missing and what could have been added to give the reader a better idea of whether they wanted to stay/visit a location. For that matter, there are no "Make Sure You Don't Miss This" notations for any of the things stated in the book. It reminds me of reading a AAA guidebook which offers a description and little else.

We are disappointed in this book. It's too dry for our taste and too unorganized. I wouldn't recommend this book. There are others which are better.

We purchased "Moon: New Mexico" at the same time we purchased this book. We should have purchased Moon's Four Corner's book instead of this one. Based upon Moon's New Mexico book, it would have offered us the guidebook that we wanted and expected - one that offered personal input and interesting information about a location.
