Shallow ocean, or "flats," fishing is one of the most popular coastal activities in Florida. No other place has such a large combination of different shallow water species. In Fishing Florida’s Flats, world-champion angler Jan Maizler draws on the expertise of numerous "flatsmasters" who share their wisdom on how to land a trophy catch.

Their advice--suitable for a range of first-time and experienced anglers--includes tackle selection, techniques, and directions to “hot spots” for each flats species. From habitat, biology, and feeding patterns to spotting tactics and state records, each flats fish is covered in detail. Maizler offers invaluable knowledge of the many vessels available, the different kinds of flats and the best ways to wade them, and important weather safety information. Maizler also reviews the recent technical and electronic developments in flats fishing, such as websites, software programs, and Global Positioning System devices that are now necessary additions to the Florida flats angler’s arsenal.

For the large and growing number of anglers who have chosen flats fishing as their sport, this is the ultimate guide for catching bonefish, tarpon, permit, barracuda, sharks, redfish, seatrout, and snook in the state. Get hooked on Fishing Florida’s Flats.

5This one is a keeper  Dec 22, 2007 By T. Lund
This is one of the best books ever compiled and published about specific regionalized fishing techniques. It might just rival Vic Dunaway's classic, Baits, Rigs and Tackle. The investment of $24.95 will pay for itself on your first outing on the water and you might want to check out the other books by Maizler. He's in a class by himself when bringing authoritative fishing basics to life for the reader. Number one on my list of presents to give people that fish -- novice or expert alike.

4Flats fishing  Jul 12, 2008 By lunker "lunker"
Good book on fishing in the flats. While I have been fishing the flats in NE Florida for a few years, I picked up a number of good tips that I am anxious to try.

5Interesting Angle on Flats Angling  Jan 16, 2012 By Tommy Thompson "Outdoor Writing and Photography"
Jan Maizler's book takes a unique approach to shallow water fishing. In the book, readers will find lots of information about general fishing techniques, plus species-specific tips, tricks and lore. The author's personal expertise with hard-fighting and elusive bonefish is informative and useful. The bonefish discussion is wrapped up with an particularly good essay by internationally-recognized angler and artist, Tim Borski. Angling for other species (tarpon, redfish, snook, permit and seatrout) is covered in individual chapters by expert guides from different Florida locations. Maizler did his research and picked some of the best anglers to contribute to this book. Readers will find information from captains Mike Locklear, 'RT' Trosset and John Kumiski thorough, and to the point, with regards to the species they target.

While the title leads one to believe that the book's contents might be limited only to Florida, I think anglers can easily adapt the sage advice of Maizler and his contributors to shallow water 'flats' fishing locations worldwide.
