Experience the wildlife of Texas, up-close and personal, through the eyes of one of the country’s most talented nature photographers. Where else can you look a coyote in the eye while it licks its chops? Spy the long tongue of a Nine-banded Armadillo as it drinks? Watch a rare Blue-faced Ringtail dragonfly eating its prey? Glimpse a Sanderling’s feet spread midair as it scurries down the beach? See an American White Pelican’s pouch turned inside-out as it yawns?

Award-winning photographer Greg Lasley has been taking pictures of wildlife for thirty years, and although he has photographed some of the most exotic creatures and remote places on earth, in Greg Lasley’s Texas Wildlife Portraits he gives homage to his favorite place for photography: his home state. With more than a hundred stunning color photographs, this book reflects Lasley’s penchant for the state’s insect life, especially dragonflies, as well as his long affection for Texas birds. In addition, many hours of patient waiting or the happenstance of a chance encounter have yielded fine images of Texas mammals and reptiles in their habitats.

Veteran Texas naturalists John and Gloria Tveten open the text with an introduction to the man behind the camera. From there, photographer’s comments and insightful photo captions help vividly re-create the moment each image was shot—what the animal was doing, what the photographer was thinking.

5Greg Laslely's Texas Wildlife Portraits (Loius Lindsey Merrick Natural Environment)  Nov 18, 2008 By Margaret C. Bamberger "nature nerd & bloger"
Greg Laslely's Texas Wildlife Portraits (Loius Lindsey Merrick Natural Environment) is a beautiful and interesting book with fabulous photographs by a man who is master photographer and an amazing naturalist. The book is beautifully laid out with stunning images on each page. There is a section of Photographer's comments about his interest in nature which started when he was a child, and his photography which started as a way of documenting rare animals or interesting aspects of them. All of the images have a comment by Greg which tells about his experience when taking the picture, and about the animal(s), which to me is one of the most fascinating aspects of the book. The fact that I have been on birding trips where Greg was one of the leaders, adds to my appreciation of him. He was always helpful, especially to those of us who were new to the sport, or in unfamiliar territory. Like many birders he was clearly more interested in sharing information than in being an "expert", and went out of his way to show me birds that I had missed. I have purchased a number of copies of this book to give as gifts.

Give yourself a gift and get this book. Even people not heavily into nature will enjoy it.
