5Cherohala hiking  Dec 08, 2011 By AllenJarvis
If you love hiking in East Tennessee and want to get away from the HUGE crowds in the Great Smoky Mountains park. Then some of the trails highlighted in this book off of the Cherohala Skyway, are the trails for you! The Cherokee national forest is an often passed over to goto the smokys, well thats a big mistake this area is just as beautiful with what seems as though almost no visitors. Have stayed several days in the back country without ever seeing another person. I have hiked many of these trails with the help of this wonderful book. Its trail guides and maps are invaluable, also it gives the best times to go for things such as wildflower displays.

5Excellent detail  Oct 11, 2011 By Sasha
I am planning a trip to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and the Slickrock Wilderness. This book has all the detail and more that I could use to plan my trip. Very detailed information on the trails, creeks, campsites etc. It also has a nice history of the wilderness area as well as notes on the flora and fauna to be found in the area. The maps are not quite as detailed as I would like, but I paired the book with the National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map #784 Fontana & Hiwassee Lakes and it was perfect.

4Great guide!  Jan 10, 2010 By Pen Name "Optional"
This is a great guide. Went on a several day trip out to JK with this guide. It gives enough detail to be handy, but not too much, so that there is no sense of adventure.

One caveat - there are two names for the trails with the largest trees: Joyce Kilmer National Recreational Trail AND Poplar Cove.
The maps in the book don't have quite enough space to represent this properly, but once you get there, the posted signs guide you in the right direction.

All in all a great guide! I would recommend it. I would also recommend heading out to Joyce Kilmer while the big trees are still there.

It's amazing.
