The most comprehensive guide to Mount Whitney, now completely revised and updated! Are you up to the challenge of ascending Mount Whitney? This guidebook contains everything you need to summit the highest point in the contiguous United States. This new edition includes a thorough examination of the planning, preparation, and physical training/conditioning necessary for a safe and successful climb, as well as an updated discussion of wilderness permit requirements of both the National Park Service and the US Forest Service. With the increasing popularity of winter ascents on Mount Whitney, a new snow and ice chapter has been added. Richins identifies the best places to camp on multi-day backpacking routes, and the most interesting exploratory side trips to take, as well as presents route variations that either reduce the length of a given route, avoid difficult terrain, or add additional "must-see" areas.

* Complete descriptions of 17 routes to the summit of Mount Whitney * Three new hiking routes: Bishop Pass Trail, Taboose Pass Trail, and Avalanche Pass Trail * A Trip Planning Guide that ranks the routes by difficulty, elevation gain, and total mileage

5Great for the north fork/ MR  Sep 18, 2009 By M. Walker
Bought this and the portal store book for a trip up the north fork trail/ mountaineer's route. Coming from the east coast and never having dealt with altitude before, I found this book very informative. If you're just going up the main trail, probably don't need a book since all the info you'd need is on the portal store message board. The north fork, aside from the eber ledges, was straightforward if you're good at following an unmarked trail but the description was useful. After iceberg lake, the route description is awesome. I'd recommend bringing the whole description with you if you're going up the mountaineer's route/north fork trail for the first time, and doing your research (there are some great pictures on the web). Portal store book better for those heading up the main trail, and lets you know that you should take the bears seriously so your car doesn't get chewed up. All in all, great book for those who want to go the hard way up.
extra note: there's no good map of the mountaineer's route, but the best maps of the area you can find easily at the inyo nat'l forest info station (where you pick up your permits).

5Great Book!  Feb 24, 2009 By Hiker/Photographer
Over the past couple of years my boyfriend and I hiked and climbed in the Mount Whitney region three times. Each time we ascended a different route following the detailed narrative and maps included in this popular guidebook. The author's attention to detail sets it apart from all the other books on Whitney. The guide includes everything one needs to know for a first-time hike to the summit or for exploring a remote, less-traveled x-c route. On our first two multi-day ascents of Whitney, we used the First Edition (which is now out of print) of this wonderful guide. Most recently we used the completely updated and revised Second Edition. The Second Edition adds much new material, new photos, three new routes, and numerous must-see side excursions.

I was concerned about altitude sickness before leaving for my first climb. Although I experienced the serious affects of the altitude for a day, I followed the advice contained in the guidebook and was able to successfully climb the peak with no further complications.

5Worth getting.  Feb 24, 2009 By Backpack Dave
Mount Whitney: The Complete Trailhead-to-Summit Guide (Second Edition) is an excellent and exceptionally thorough guidebook for anyone considering hiking in the Mount Whitney area. The book is written in an unbiased, fresh, and easy-to-understand style. It should be required reading for all those planning a trip to Mount Whitney's summit.

I have reviewed several other guidebooks on Mount Whitney and have been disappointed by the quality of the publications and their lack of detail. However, this book stands out in the crowd because it is comprehensive, easy to use, and contains a nice variety of 15 hiking routes to the summit. It contains a head-to-head trip planning comparison of the mileage and difficulty of the terrain for each route. This trip-planning tool is useful in selecting a hiking route that is just right for the abilities of your group.

What makes this book special is that of the 15 routes, five require limited amounts of x-c travel without benefit of a well-maintained trail. This allows the adventuresome hiker/climber to leave the crowds behind and explore spectacular and remote scenery seldom visited. The Mountaineers Route is one of those awesome x-c routes and the guidebook includes UTM coordinates of the route so you can use your GPS to stay on course. This is a must read if you plan to climb Whitney.

5Mount Whitney: The Complete Trailhead to Summit Guide  Jun 17, 2010 By John Post
I lost my copy of this book and enjoyed it so much I'm back to Amazon for another. I even wrote to the author once and he gave me a helpful, detailed response. A must have to climb Whitney, especially if you're looking for variety and a competent opinion.
