Dined at Uncle Charles' on Blackberry Pudding Dec 04, 2008
By Lightman
Who did?
Captain Gardner's niece (hence the reference to Uncle Charles) as recorded in her diary in July of 1846. The entry reads, "They live in a little cottage place on a little rise of ground". Then comes the part about the blackberry pudding.
The "little cottage place" today is one of the exceptional residences profiled in Nantucket Island Living. Each one is lovingly described with an attentiveness that drills down to the level of blackberry pudding when necessary to establish the context, atmosphere, and ultimately the essence of the place.
This is fitting; as the author writes in the introduction, "Nantucket is more than a place - it is a state of mind".
And so it is.
Gorgeous photography by Terry Pommett complements the text. It's an absolute feast for the eyes.
The exploration of the island takes us from the elegance and history of Town (that's what the locals call it) to windswept beach cottages, from stately seaside mansions to the gardens and the quaint village of Siasconset.
Intertwined with it all is an overview of the island's history, traditions, natural life, and culture.
This is a book that will be enjoyed over and over again.

"Mystery reader...."
This book is BEAUTIFUL. I purchased it as a gift for a long time Nantucket visitor. She is thrilled. The pictures are wonderful and crisp and the writing is very descriptive. I'd say this is an excellent purchase.

A little disappointed Aug 31, 2011
By L. Rowley
"Gardener"
I have been to Nantucket many times and it's one of my favorite places. However, I was a little disappointed with this book - particularly in the choice of home interiors the author chose to feature. The home interiors in this book could be of any home anywhere in this country. They did not reflect the island, were too formal, too trendy, too modern, and frankly I felt like I was looking at a furniture store catalogue.....bland, generic, too scripted and boring. The exteriors of the houses were lovely and reflected beautiful restorations of historic homes that were lovingly cared for. However, the interiors did not relate to the houses at all. I ordered "Martha's Vineyard Houses and Gardens" at the same time and it is wonderful - exactly what I'd hoped "Nantucket Island Living" would be. Ms. Linsley should study the Martha's Vineyard book to see how to get it right. I will keep "Nantucket Island Living", as it's OK - but it won't ever be a book I keep reaching for again and again.

I have been to Nantucket several times but I have to say that the photography in this book by Terry Pommett is fantastic as all of his work has always been - So for all of you people out there who have never been to Nantucket but have wanted to "buy this book" and for anyone who has been there and fallen in love with this town you have to purchase this book to rekindle those wonderful memories.
