A Pretty Darn Good Hike, if not the Best Apr 01, 2009
By Fritz R. Ward
"dayhiker"
Elizabeth Wenk is rapidly taking her place among the best of a new crop of authors at Wilderness Press. After taking over the John Muir Trail guide, she has now authored the second book in the One Best Hike Series, a guide to the Mt. Whitney Trail out of Lone Pine. Like her first book, this one is a winner even if it sometimes appears to offer too much of a good thing.
The One Best Hike series is somewhat unique in hiking literature. Each book focuses on a single (very popular) trail and tries to provide guidance for preparing your hike, a route description, natural and human history, and what to expect on the trail. Wenk does a grand job on every one of these elements in this book. Readers hoping to hike the trail in a day will get a good estimate of the time expenditure involved (14-17 hours) while those hoping for a more measured pace are provided with all the current camping regulations.
But what makes this book a fun read are all the side bars sprinkled throughout the text. From how the body reacts to hypoxia, to solar radiation, place names, cell phones, and a host of other topics, this book offers a lot of information, not all of which you might need on the trail itself. Indeed, Ms. Wenk suggests that day hikers might be better served to simply photocopy the 22 pages of actual guide rather than pack the whole book. But unless you are absolutely committed to ultra light backpacking even on a 2-4 day trip, this book might be fun to carry along.
Climbing Mt. Whitney is one of those "must do" hikes. No technical skills are required, which makes the summit almost unique among California's 14,000ft peaks. I've done it twice and enjoyed the region both times. On a third occasion I did not summit. I found a distraction that somehow escaped notice in this book. The trout in Consultation Lake near Trail Camp are huge! That said, this is a wonderful guide and a real plus for hikers intent on hitting the Whitney Trail.

The Perfect Guide Sep 07, 2009
By Kelly G. Flood This is the perfect guide book for hiking Mt. Whitney. I purchased several others, but, this was the one that had the most information in a clear and concise format. Point for point it was exactly like the hike. I could not have been better prepared having read this book. Highly recommended to anyone planning on hiking the Mt. Whitney main trail.

Great Guide for Mt Whitney Summiteers May 30, 2009
By Penny Dorsch I bought this guide because I wanted all the information to hike up Mt Whitney in the one place and it seemed to be the best one around. Now that I have read it, I think I got it right.
Elizabeth Wenk has assembled an essential compendium for a budding Mt Whitney summiteer. There is not a question unanswered nor a fear unaddressed. This book allows you to undertake your first challenging hike to the summit of Mt Whitney with complete confidence.
With this book you will found out how to prepare for the hike, what to take, how to get permission and what to expect - except of course the exhilaration when you reach the summit. Then it has some more. You can learn about the history of the first adventurers to climb it, the peak's role in astronomy, the area's geology, plants and animals and about how to respect and look after this remarkable peak.
All but hardened hikers will grow to be grateful for Elizabeth Wenk and her helpful style. After summiting Mt Whitney, I'll be looking forward to using her next guide (which one next Elizabeth?).
