It is also the site of one the world's greatest population concentrations and tourist destinations. Until now, the many millions of people living on and visiting California's coastline have gone without a guide to aid in exploring the abundant seashore life right under their noses. The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life of California changes everything.
In a book that is as visually stunning as it is informative, Duane Sept dedicates full-colour photographs and thorough descriptions to each of the most common plants and animals to be found along the saltwater shores of California. Each entry includes the most useful common names for the species along with the scientific or Latin name; a description of its distinguishing physical features or behaviour; and information on its size, habitat and range. There are also sections on understanding tides and intertidal habitats, lists of the best beachcombing sites in California and tips on how to observe seashore life in an ecologically friendly manner.
Scientifically accurate, yet simple and straightforward in approach, The Beachcomber's Guide to Seashore Life of California is the perfect companion for every interested observer - the family or the school group, the Sunday beach-walker or the career naturalist. | | | |

Invertebrate ID Dec 24, 2009

I really like this field guide as it gives you the common names, the most updated scientific names, and also the older scientific and common names. It is quite complete, and a must for a serious tide pooler in Calif. In addition, it also has a good representative section on algae, which many book seem to lack. It is also small enough to carry in the tide pools. I am a retired Zoology Community College Instructor and also a docent for the state parks, and consider this book a must have.

Good beachcomber resource Jan 11, 2007
By Nevada Deb The photos in this book are incredible. I can't wait to take this to California on my next beachcombing experience. I like J. Duane's Sept's field guides. This is a good resource.

Perfect Guide To Tidepools Aug 17, 2009
By Monica Parks Out of the 3 books I purchased on tide pools for Northern California this has the most information. Works well with the other 2. Have enjoyed all of them. Has made exploring the tide pools so much more fun.

One of my favorite field guides Mar 23, 2010
By Mary L. Mills This is a handy informative book on beaches on the west coast. While the tidal says "California" many of the organisms depicted are common in the Pacific NW. Photographs are good quality and of great help in identification.
