5The perfect companion for your Big Bend trip  Sep 14, 2009 By D. Stephens
I found this little pocket guide to be the perfect companion for taking along on your Big Bend adventure. It's not only great at the national park, but for the surrounding area, as well. Literally pocket-sized, you can easily take it with you for quick reference. Don't let the size fool you, though, because Allan Kimball has packed a wealth of information in this little book!

The Big Bend Guide begins with a note from the author about playing in his grandfather's attic when he was eight years old. This one experience sparked an interest and desire for this area that has never faded. It turns out his grandfather was in the U.S. cavalry, and was one of those men who pursued Pancho Villa all over the Chihuahuan Desert. When his grandfather died, Allan made a trip to Big Bend to see all those places his grandfather told him about.

The author knows this part of Texas like a close friend. In fact, he's written two well-researched historical novels with the Big Bend region as the geographical back-drop: Rainbows Wait for Rain and The Legend of Fort Leaton. Allan gives practical information, such as what kinds of tents and water containers are best suited for the area. He tell us to not feed the bears; to make yourself "look big" and not run away if you encounter a mountain lion! I love it, also, when he offers his personal opinions and commentary along the way, like when he talks about hydration packs for hiking: "I don't like them at all." He just doesn't like water sloshing around on his back.

Seriously, though, the historical and geographical insights in this book are excellent, and provide for great reading. You'll enjoy a trip to Big Bend whether you read this book or not. But the region will "come alive" to you if you take this book along with you.

5Big help for infrequent visitors  Sep 12, 2009 By Peggy S. Snodgrass
This book is a must for folks like me who are not familiar with the park and the area in general. I would highly recommend it to anyone making plans to travel to the Big Bend. Peggy Snodgrass

5Great Little Guide to The Big Bend  Sep 16, 2009 By Cynthia J. Wright
Just the right size to fit a pocket, Allan Kimball's The Big Bend Guide is packed with information everyone planning a trip to the national park will need. Written primarily for those visiting the Big Bend for the first time, who have limited time and resources, the guide recommends hikes, itineraries, where to catch the best sights and where to relax at day's end. Since first visiting Big Bend country in 1969, Kimball has acquired property, guided tours and written extensively about the area. And when he writes, "the lizard-like stillness in the Big Bend is a powerful intoxicant," one feels impelled to follow the book's suggestions and visit.

4A lot of good info in a little package  Sep 16, 2009 By James Altgelt
One of the "must do" destinations in southern Texas is its legendary "Big Bend." With its thousands of miles of untainted mountains, streams, deserts, chaparal and more (speckled here and there with pockets of civilzation -- some primative, some luxurious) visitors can be overwhelmed with how best to tackle so much while trying to maintain an often times tight schedule. Thankfully, veteran traveler and author Allan Kimball has created the perfect tool to maximize one's experiece when journeying (for a few days or a few weeks) to this incredible area -- his 2nd edition "Big Bend Guide." Filled with essential "where to go, what to do and what to take" information in an extremely user-friendly and well-written format, Kimball truly makes "doing Big Bend right" easy. Read it before going then carry it as a daily reference after arrival. It will fit comfortably in the back pocket of your jeans.
