Spanning the physical and emotional breadth of Tennessee, from rural to urban settings and intimate portraits to majestic perspectives, they reveal in pictures and essays the vitality and diversity of a singular land. Conveying the spirit of the state with dramatic force are 100 full-color images. They focus on the character of the people in their natural settings (a worker in a cotton warehouse; a sculptor in his studio; a father and son in their general store) and signs of people within landscapes (a row of white rocking chairs facing a dream-like Smokies sunset). Spaced among the images are the essays, lyrically exploring the nature of the land and its people and taking you from the excited chant of the auctioneer to the sacred silence of the battlefield. The result is a vivid work that evokes the pride, personality and heritage of Tennessee. | | | |

Great Gift for a Tennessean! Jul 18, 2001 This is a wonderful gift for anyone who has a Tennessee heritage - and will be a treasure to anyone who calls Tennessee home and "lives" there through history, family, memory and spirit. The pictures and words paint a wonderful tapestry that will ring familar with anyone who shares their "roots" with the wonderful people of Tennessee. It was a special gift to me and I have, in turn, given it to many who share a connection to the colorful and distinct culture of this state and its people.
