This Book Made Me Hungry Jul 14, 2010
By Gilgamesh Make sure to read [[ASIN:1934159050 To Japan with Love: A Travel Guide for the Connoisseur] before going there. It is not a conventional travel guide (Heiter herself admits in the introduction that it is not comprehensive). Although it doesn't contain extensive lists of hotels, restaurants, and so forth, it is fun reading.
SO, WHY FIVE STARS? ------------------------------------ The book offers vivid descriptions of experiences in Japan, and it will give you ideas about possibilities for a different kind of trip. I lived in Japan for several years, and I'm headed back there in a few weeks, so I wanted to check out some of the travel literature.
I was skeptical about this book at first, but to my amazement, I found one of my favorite restaurants mentioned in it. Tsuki no niwa is off the beaten path in Mie prefecture, where you wouldn't expect most guides to bother going. It brought back wonderful memories--even of the dangerously steep staircase! The authors know good restaurants! I can't wait to go try them out.
Ironically, the author of that essay traveled all the way from Nagoya into the countryside to eat there. Another favorite restaurant of mine is IN Nagoya. Interested vegetarians (and non-vegetarians too!) may want to check out Yaya (Naka-ku).
SUMMARY ------------------------------------ Highly recommended for anyone who loves eating and reading about tasty dining experiences.
